Need help with breeding!
Hello,
I was wondering about the male to female ratio to breed rats, do I put one male to two females or what? I need A LOT of rats, I have snakes with endless stomachs it seems.. lol
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Billy Nicholas

Hi Billy!
Male rats at the appropriate age can mate around 400 times in one days time. A successful ejaculation by the male can be confirmed by him cleaning his penis immediately after coupling with the female. Otherwise it's just foreplay or "Mock Mating".
one male, or your 'Stud rat', is suitable for breeding innumerable females, I have successfully produced 8 pregnant females within an hour from the same male on one occasion.
The easiest way to find a rat suitable for being your stud is to look for basic desirable features (as a feederbreeder that means to you that it looks healthy with no obvious genetic defects) with the size and general shape of a brick hahaha.
Males around a year old are my preferred age for studs, younger ones do not have the influx of hormones making them less aggressive breeders.

A side note, if you would really like you can have 2 studs as to add more variety to your gene pool so you dont start producing unhealthy rats as a result of being negligent with knowing who's mating with who. however, most half-sibling rat couplings with the father being the common parent is totally fine and is how it is generally done in the wild. Rat 'colonies' are really just big families, generally of one male and multiple females.

Sorry for not having a source handy, but several times I read one female rat for every snake. I have four females and four snakes and that ratio is rather perfect, so long as they continue producing 10+ litters.
