    Mya's new enclosure :)

    It's all set up

Waiting for LED lights and Viv lock. Then when temps n humidity satisfactory I can bring her home

Took doors off to show inside as gloomy in that corner! Popped a tree branch in to give her the option of a little climb

Hide at cool end behind water bowl

Hide at hot end (heat mat under Viv at this end)

    I'm quite pleased with it

    Re: Mya's new enclosure :)

Just a quick question on positioning of thermometers and hygrometer.

I have hygrometer in the middle of the back panel to measure ambient humidity. Is that ok or should I have it on the side near the water bowl. Which actually leads me to the question, is the water ok at the cool end or should I switch to warm end?

I have a 2 probe digital thermometer. Warm end I have it in the hide at that end. Cool end I have it exposed on the viv floor between the water bowl and hide. Are these locations ok?
Warm end the probe is laid on the orchid bark under the hide but I have a feeling she'll move it so she's just laid on the viv floor. Thinking it better to have the probe in contact with the viv floor in there too?

Can someone plz advise on heat mat positioning

Currently under Viv but on another forum I've been warned this can cause mat burn out or worse!

They advise As long as mat is on stat it will be safe to use inside the Viv but store owner said not to

    I'm so confused

Do not use inside the enclosure. It should be the size of 1/3 to 2/3 of enclosures bottom placed underneath and offset to one side. The thermostat mounts between the uth and the enclosures bottom on the outside.

    However, very nice viv

Use under the viv but raise up all four corners a bit to vent so it does not overheat. If you place the mat inside moisture from the humidity and snake feces will damage the mat.

Even though it is a wooden Viv?

with wood being an insulator won't it mean the mat will get really hot but the temp inside won't be as high as I thought heatmats heated what thy were touching? If there's a gap between bottom of Viv and heat mat then won't all the heat be lost?

    so confusing!

    Re: Mya's new enclosure :)

Right!! Heat mat been on since 4pm yesterday and temp in viv is only 29.3C. It isn't hot enough!!

Due to size of viv, I can't use ceramic yet as fitting + bulb+ guard means it will sit too near the floor. Plus she is just a baby so I'm going with heat mat alone until she is big enough for larger viv.

I will therefore (like a lot of other keepers I have found) be putting the mat inside the viv. HOWEVER, I will put polystyrene under the mat and either a piece of Perspex or lino over the top to prevent burns. PLUS stat probe will be in contact with the mat and so it shouldn't get anywhere near hot enough to burn my girl.

Thank you so much for your advice on this but I've made an informed decision based on the need for a higher temp and what I've read other experienced keepers are doing in the UK

If they've had no problems for the numerous years they've kept/bred royals, then this method is for us.

Don't want to upset anyone, there seems to be reasons for and against Inside and outside viv. I need higher temp though so inside (with safety precautions) is for us.
