Exclamation Advice on keeping glass tank heated?

    Hello, all.

I have been struggling to keep my terrerium warmer than 80 degrees. I've tried covering the screen tops to try and keep the heat/humidity in, I have a controlled UTH & CTH, multiple thermometers, and even moss to try and keep the heat/humidity consistent. Are there any devices (like foggers, but for just heat and not humidity) where it will keep my terrarium at a consistent 90F? Or any advice? What of thermostats?
I just want the best of health for my baby boy. And having his home in the late 70s early 80s temp isn't good.

The whole terrarium should not be at 90 degrees. They need a temp gradient so they can regulate their temperature. High 70s and low 80s is perfect for the cool side, it should only be 90 on the hotspot of the tank.

Re: Advice on keeping glass tank heated?

Thanks for clarifying. I know the WHOLE enclosure shouldn't be 90F but I thought at least in the 80-85F zone is where it should stay.

Have you tried getting a higher wattage bulb? I run a 100 watt CHE in one of my cages to keep it warm enough.

How big is your terrarium? If you, post a photo of your setup.

I have found that the temp of the room has a big affect on the temp of the tank. If i turn my thermostat down on my house by even 1 or 2 degrees, then my overall temp in the tank also goes down, so I have to set the room temp, then adjust the UTH and infrared bulb. I have a 40 gallon glass tank, and this is my setup. UTH and Infrared bulb are on the same side, so i set them where the warm ambient temp is around 85 and surface temp is 90ish. Then i have a warm mist humidifier setup next to the tank and funnel the steam to the top of the cool side. This keeps the cool side in the high 70's and the humidity right where it should be.

Ambient air at 80 is okay. What are your actual surface temps and what are you measuring with?

Just insulate the tank. Both ends, the back, the top everywhere except where fixtures go through, even the bottom except where the UTH is. Use 1" foam from the home improvement store or something similar. Tape or hot glue it on, you can even get some foam safe paint if you don't want to have to see the pink or blue or whatever.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?

Re: Advice on keeping glass tank heated?

When I was using glass tanks I went to Home Depot and bought a roll of bubble wrap with 1/4 inch bubbles. Two layers on the sides and back made a difference in maintaining temps. Just trim to size and tape it onto the tank. It is made of slightly transparent green plastic so looked OK.

Sounds like you just need a bigger watt bulb. I have no problem keeping my hot spot 90 and sometimes even have to dial it back if the house gets hot. I do have 1/2 the top of the screen covered in aluminum foil but that is for humidity not heat.

Re: Advice on keeping glass tank heated?

For humidity I modified a humidifier by using plastic tubing, pvc coupling, and lots of hot glue to redirect all of the humidity into the cage. It's worked really well for me. I live in the desert and putting a http://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Ult...rds=humidifier in there. I also just strap on more heat and make sure it doesn't go over with an in tank thermostat.
