Hide size

How do you guys figure out what size hide to get your BP? I have a big one in his tank that he uses here and there but I guess he doesn't use it always because its to big and its open from both sides? It's one of those wooden logs. I want to get some new hides because I feel the snake isn't using cause too roomy if that's possible?

Also is any spray paint safe for them to be by? I wanted to darling something inside his/her cage and want to make sure its safe.

How much does your snake weigh?

This is what I've used for myself...

Small snakes (80 to 150g usually)

I have a 220+ g female that stuffs herself into one of those small ones, though.

This is what size I have used for anything 80 to 600 or 700g snakes usually:

I do have a 1000g female that jams herself into the above medium hide, although she's starting to really bust out of it.

Anything over 800g usually gets large hide:

That large hide is still being used by my 1700g and 2200g females. The 1700g can fit inside if she wants...the 2200g female usually just pushes it forwards and hides behind it, although if she really wants she jams herself in in as well...it just takes a little effort.

Size ranges can vary just because I didn't always have the exact size available I wanted. In that case I usually used a bigger hide than necessary. If the hide was bigger than needed (ie, med hide on a 100g snake) I just fill the hide with crumpled paper or small flipped over 3" or 4" water bowls to fill the space. They climb in the hide and push things around til they're comfortable.

You don't need to use these specific hides, but hopefully they should give you a basic idea on what dimensions will work for what size snake. Bigger is okay because you can fill it with stuff, but you'll be surprised how small they can fit in if they choose.

Most people get hides from reptile basic. And snakes like a snug fit when it comes to their hides. My 1800g female still uses her medium sized hide, she just scrunches herself in there

I bought two plastic bowl from Dollar Tree & cut doors in them. No sense spending $15+ for a single hide for a snake who's going to outgrow it shortly. These bowls were 2/$1. And Monty seems to love them. They are dark blue so they are dark inside. They are medium size cereal bowls I'd say. He's about 450g.
