never under stood color change in a boa

Well my Guyana that I got last febuary that had pin worms and mites with an attitude from hell has took a complete 180. He is a calm feeder. all I have to do is lay the rat in his tank and he take its no problem. well one thing I never understood was color change in a boa from day and night. He is a grey boa with the burgundy red saddles and tail but during the day he is a plum purple/blue and deeper red, then he will go to his light phase. I wish I had a good dslr to capture what he looks like. why do they change color like this?

Our Hog Island does this from day to night. Could be a color change to help with camouflage.

Most boas change colours from day to night to some degree. Leopards are an extreme example of this. I've never actually given it much thought to be honest. It's really cool to see though.
