It's a dual-reader, with probes. For measuring ambient areas I use a temp gun.

I zip tie them to the inside wall of my tubs. It's mostly successful but I have one that still figures out how to dislodge it and drag it around places.

Temp guns measure surface temp. I would go ahead and put the thermometer in the cage. Have it on the "cool side" to read ambient temp and then run the probe over to the hot side to measure the hot spot temp. That's what I would do in my terrariums when I had them.
