    Record Keeping Software Question

So I have been using Reptile Scan as my record keeper for my snake collection. I really like this software, you could download the app from the app store for both iOS and android users. It as a nice barcode that you scan and use for quick updates on feeding, breeding activities, weights, and more record keeping info. Well I recently found a problem with this app when I sold one of my snakes.

Before I updated to “digital” recorded keeping it was all by had and when I sold an animal I would make a copy of the animals cage card and send copy with the snake to its new owner for their record keeping and as well as verification of animal genetics. (Cage card contained feedings, sheds, breeding notes, animal info, same set up as Ralph Davis sense I got the original record from him)

Well I was shipping a snake out and I found out I couldn’t print the snakes record off the Reptile Scan software. The only thing I could print is the barcode, expo stickers, and animal label sticker. I was so bummed out, I eventually filled out and old cage format and sent it with the snake but that really sucked.

Anyone else using Reptile Scan that could tell me something I don’t know. I was looking to get another software like iherp, but due to my large collection I don t want to transfer all my animals without asking a few questions. I know a lot of members use iherp so could you let me know if they have a “Barcode”/ scanning method, are you able to print individual animal records? If there is any other software recommendations from other members please let me know.

This really sucks because I like everything about the Reptile Scan app, the visual aspect, user friendly, and its easy access from my iPhone, but not being able to print records like feeding , breeding, sheds, really sucks!!!!

I'm fairly certain iherp doesn't have barcodes you can scan like reptile scan. I use reptile scan myself, but have yet to try and print anything. I know there are other apps like RS, you could maybe look into those. Another option would be to set up a spreadsheet and just copy paste the pertinent info from RS as needed when selling. I'm at work currently so I can't play around with trying to print an RS profile, but I'll look into it tomorrow and update if no one else has any input

Now you've got me curious about developing my own program or a macro to keep track of things such as this. I do a lot of programming as a hobby so this definitely interests me.

Yea reptile scan works great. However it doesn't really convert information saved into a neat printable format like a PDF, as far as I'm aware. Although in defense of it I can't, personallly, see the need to print out pages of feeding, shedding, etc. Records. I can understand genetics and hatch dates and all that. But that's easy enough to put into a database and print as necessary.

I can't really imagine a buyer being interested in when a specimen ate past the last feed. Same with shedding and all that. Which is easy enough to look up on RS and plug into an email or whatever you like.

And if you're the breeder, there doesn't seem to be a need for RS if you're just going to print out paper records anyway.

Amending my previous statement. I went to the reptile scan website myself and there are options to print sales cards populated with all the normal info as well as last feed and last shed.

There is also an option to print out a particular animal's complete records as PDF. This is on the website www.reptilescan.com

Not sure if there is a free version of this app out there but I bought the 25$ one and I have all these options.

    Re: Record Keeping Software Question

Yes, there is the option of printing out a reptile's whole 'history' on Reptile Scan.

From the main listing of all your reptiles, go to the one you want to print, click 'Show'.

On the top left you'll see a box that says 'Actions'. Click it, hit the drop down button. Then click 'As PDF.'

It will give you a PDF file of every action you have of that reptile, nice and clean, too. I love it.

You know I feel really stupid right now….I totally forgot to go to RS website and try to print from there. I can not believe I didn’t think of this when I was trouble shooting thanks for the help everyone. To be honest a buyer doesn’t really need the info of last shed or feeding but it’s nice info to have on hand. I got the idea from Ralph Davis, when I purchased one of my snakes from him he sent the animals record card with him. I thought this was really cool and a nice idea for my record keeping and wanted to offer the same services for future customers. I am a ESTJ, and have major ODC lol so it really doesn’t need to be done but I still do it. Thanks for everyone’s help sorry for the silly over look.

Other than the printing issue/confusion, do you think the $25 is worth it? I have been interested in Reptile Scan for a while but I am hesitant to transfer over to that system. I currently keep all records in spreadsheets and I manually enter in the data.
