    Quastion about bulbs and heating

Hey y'all I'm looking at getting new bulbs for my lamp as my day bulb burned out tonight. I am wonder what y'all prefer. I've only had the current bulbs for a mounth witch seems a little short. What do y'all use for bulbs and how long do they last. Debating on switching to a black night bulb as the red bugs me while I sleep. Is basking better verses traditional shaped? I have a 20 gallon glass tank and I'm using this lamp http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Reptil...n=shopping.com

i am using a UTH as well but it dosnt heat as well as I would like. Running 24/7 I only get about 81 degrees as a high and my cool side is about 70 where as with lamp I run 89-92 with cool side about 75 (winter is here and keeping up the cool side has been a struggle

The uth only heats the surface to give a hot spot, it doesn't heat the air. The black night bulb would be fine or a ceramic heat emitter. Unless you're using it to view him the daylight bulb isn't necessary

I have a thermostat hooked up that provides power to all of it so that the lamps don't roast him as well as the UTH I have a thermometer that is mounted inside his hide that gives me the temp just a mm above the substrate

My set up is as follows...UTH set at 88-90 monitored by hydrofarm thermostat and a in the tank thermometer..100 watt reg day time bulb and a red light bulb 75 watts at night...80% of the tank covered with a rag, which I damp 2 times a day morning and at night.otside averages 86-88 cool side 78-80, humidity basically stays a steady 40-50 on the reg.

After reading this thread I'm probably gonna grab a black bulb pretty soon, too. Gotta say, that ominous red glow in the corner of my bedroom has kept me up its fair share haha

There is an opportunity cost with everything, I use infared bulbs because I get more heat per wattage and they are sturdier than night bulbs.

@OP: If the UTH is not working, but the lamp is getting you the temps you need, then go ahead and just remove the UTH.

You have a heat lamp and a UTH plugged into the same thermostat? Is it a multi channel thermostat?

If it isn't you need to unplug one of the heat sources from it. You cannot regulate two different types of heat sources on a single thermostat.

This wont work unless your stat is for multiple zones. A thermostat can only regulate items of the same wattage. In your case it should only be controlling your UTH

I can sleep any time anywhere, plus it's good as a night light,so I don't trip on my cats ( the rare times they aren't sleeping with me)or walk into anything when I wake up at 3 am to pee... In use the red light in one tank and black light in the other.
