heating questions.
Ok so I have a couple questions. First I got my girl a new clean cage, a couple hides heat mat, screen top that is mostly covered with foil, and moss imside the enclosure. Its just a 20 long right now. I will have to save up to get the one I really want. I also put a 60 watt red incandescent light in a dome on it. Ok here are the questions. Can the light cause a fire if I set it on the screen top without it coming in contact with anyrhing? Or should I devise a way to suspend it a little above the top? I also insulated most of the glass. Only half the front is viewable. The hot side is reading between 85-92 degrees humidity is around 60%. Cool side is ranging around the 85 degree mark and 60% also. She does have water and I am misting the enclosure a few times a day. I think Im going to have to redo the top covering for better air circulation.

Humidity seems fine, but the cool side should be cooler

Re: heating questions.
Thats another reason I'm thinking I will have to suspend this light. That way excess heat goies here in room on her enclosure.

They do make the setup to suspend the light, I think Zilla

I have an adjustable lamp and I like it a lot more then the bulb sitting on top of the cage since you can control the temps. I have this exo terra one it's a little less expensive then zoo med but once it's stuck onto the tank it's permanent.

I have a clamp light that I can suspend above the enclosure. I just need to device a way to do it. Its a red 60 watt in there right now. Wonder what kind of diy stuff is still in my shed. She is just hanging out right now and isn't showing signs of distress so I will get it figured out today. I am using a stupid rheostat till I can find a thermostat I like and is easy to use. I want to be able to plug it in set it and leave it. The rheo is on low but doesn't seem to be working right in my opinion. I am looking around and think I like the looks of the Hygrowfarms thermostat best. Its a digital heat mat one. I think it has 2 outlets if not no light and no worries. I did elevate 1 side of her enclosure for ventilation to the heat mat under it. Now after a few days of destressing I need to clean her water dish. All ive done lately is set this one up and checked it. Maybe she's calmed down after the moving so much ive done to her lately. Poor thing didn't really have a moments rest between them bringing her back, getting the old cage cleaned, and then a new clean one. Good thing is this next part is just cleaning water, and checking for poop. And devising a way to suspend this light some. I hate heat lamps. They are either in the way, burn you, or burn out.

Re: heating questions.
Ok got water cleaned and filled. She has calmed down a lot. No hissing at me. Her temp on cool side is around 83 right now. I removed the foil. Going to put saran wrap around middle of the screen. After it warms up outside I will go scouting in my shed to see if I have anything I can use to suspend that light a bit. Just going to work on these things and not disturb her too much till she is mor comfy.

How is your hot side reading a 7 degree difference,if so then how is your cool side 85 and your humidity 60.. Idk,but to me that don't sound right. Unless you have a substrate that is good for humidity. It your temps don't sound righ. Common sense tells me it don't seem right.what watt bulb are you using? pics of your set up? How are you monitoring temps and where are your temperature gauges set?
i have a 20 long and using a temp gun check my temps. I also have therm strip in my tank( which is set right and quiet accurate.). My 20 long I have no UTH and hot side surface is 88-90 and cool side surface is 78-81 and my humidity is 40-50.

Re: heating questions.
I have a uth and 60 watt bulb on a cheap rheostat that isn't worth my dog's poop. I have a blanket wrapped around and taped on 3 sides with a towel over half the front. I have forest moss which is kept damp, and eco earth coco hush, 2 clay hides with moss inside and out, and water dish in the middle. I had foil on a little over half the screen to hold in heat and humidity. Replacing that with saran wrap here in a bit, 2 acurite thermo hygros, one on each side. I have a 2 yr old rhat is enchanted with her and I don't want him freaking her out thats why only half the front is visible. The thermo hygros are a little below the surface so its picking up accurately I hope. I mist her cage a few times a day and turn the light on and off as needed if it starts getting too warm. There isn't a big difference on humidity on either side and the temps are about 9 degrees different right now. She isnt dehydrated like she was when I got her back. Fresh water, and good humidity has done wonders on that. Having a good secure tank with good heat and humidity has done wonders on her temperament too. No hissing when I was doing spot check water and misting this morning. She was more curious than she has been. I know as they get older they can go through personality changes. I am wondering if after she sheds, and eats again if she will be my sweet girl again. She hasn't blued yet so thinking of trying to feed her before she does. I will just have to remove her water before I do.
