Still a beginner but here we go !!!

My son (15) and I (47) have recently started keeping BP's. We started off a couple of months ago with 1.1 Norms.

Now we have built racks and started feeder colonies and we placed an order with Bob Clark for our first females of the future...

We live in Dubai and these will be shipped to us in a week or two.

Here are some pics of our new ladies sent by Bob to ease the anticipation.





The 0.1 Bumble bee we are getting is not in the picture.

What we eventually went with for is;

0.2 Mojave
0.1 Lesser
0.1 Super Pastel
0.1 Yellow Belly Pastel
0.1 Enchi
0.1 Pinstripe
0.1 Bumble Bee

Our first simple project(s) include Mystic Potion and BEL, so we are looking to get 1.0 Mystic and 1.0 Lesser. We are also watching the 1.0 Banana prices come down and hope that in 8 months time or so they will be affordable. Those banana combo's are really nice!

If this were your collection of girls, what males would you be looking to obtain?

First off, congrats on the collection! And what are your plans with the 0.2 mojaves? I'd be looking for 1.0 mojave to make a bel (sorry if I'm wrong, I'm a beginner to, but i believe Mojave x Mojave makes bel) so that you could still make something else with the lesser and still get your bel. And a nice pair would be anything with pastel in it to your female pin, to make some pastel pins, so far those to me have been my favorite pin combo besides the banana pin.

Hi Achilles;

BEL's can be as a result of numerous Combo's, including the Super forms (i.e. 2 x) of Mojave, Butter, Honey and Lesser. It can also result from [Butter x Lesser], [Butter x Mojave] and [Lesser x Mojave].

So you are correct in that we could have gone for 1.1 Mojave and achieved the Super Mojave (BEL) however, I read a good article that was talking about the concepts of working on projects (or aiming for a specific result) and, in order to reduce the risk of waiting for 2-3 years and then your only female decides she does not like the matching male = no result, one should consider doubling up in order to increase your chances.

The two projects we are planning to start with are Mystic Potion and BEL so [Mystic x Mojave] will give us the Mystic Potions (possibly 2 clutches worth in the best case scenario), Mojave's, Mystic's and Normals. The 1.0's can be line bred back to the parent 0.1's to get the Super form (i.e. BEL's).

If we get another 1.0 Lesser, that gives us 1/4 Super form of Lesser (BEL) when matched with the 0.1 Lesser and 1/4 Lesser Mojave (BEL) if we put him to the 0.2 Mojave's.

Being that we are not set on the males yet (except for the Mystic at this point) we still have numerous options open to us.

We too are beginners, so these choices are both a fun and a learning experience for us.
