    Define "my chest hurts"

    Burning??
    Crushing??

    Shortness of breath??

(I'm in the animal health field, so I'm not a random creeper asking you for details about your medical condition )

could be allergies too. I've known a decent number of people, myself included, who are allergic to rat urine. Cleaning would definitely trigger symptoms.
Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.
