    Incubator ?

My female ovulated on 5/2 when should I turn on my incubator? I will be regulating the temp with my herpstat pro. I bought 2 of these to track my temp at the top and bottom. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005V6...dir_mdp_mobile

    Incubator ?

I'd be getting it ready sooner rather than later. I had mine running for a month before I had eggs.

Yeah its all set up just need to turn it on. Might move the heat tape a little but that's it. Will those thermometers help?

I like to have the incubator ready a month out or so as well. Helps make sure its all ready to go and at temps I am happy with.

As for the thermometers, yes, they should help give you a good idea of what the temps are. However with new thermometers, I like to check them just to make sure they are relatively accurate. I do this for a living so I just take them to work and throw them in the dry well calibrator, but if I did not have one of those, I would stick the probes right next to my herpstat probes and see if they are all reading close.

Another thing you could do, which would probably be better is make an ice bath with 2/3 shaved ice and 1/3 water stir it up, it should be like a slushy, put the probe in a latex glove, and stick it in the bath. It should read 32°F, if it doesn't you will have a good idea of how far off it is.

I know that may seem excessive, but if you are relying on them for your temp at or near the eggs and they happen to be 3 or 4°F off, which they can be, you might end up wishing you did it.

I turn on my incubator when I get my first post-ovy shed, which is roughly 35 days pre-lay for most of my girls.

    Re: Incubator ?

I got my thermometers. They've been sitting on my table for 30 min.

OK my plan for my egg box.

    Lid
    Press and seal
    Eggs
    Egg crate
    Hatch rite

I'm thinking about putting one of the thermometers probes I just got between the lid and press and seal. Is this a good spot?

Get it all set up now and be done with it. I had my egg tubs set up when I noticed my female ovulating. That way when your eggs drop you aren't scrambling to get the egg tubs together. Just plop in the eggs and off to the incubator!

I would put one of the thermometers right in the tub around the eggs, and another somewhere inside the incubator. The mini fridge I have has two semi accurate internal thermometers that I use to monitor extreme temp fluctuations, and I have a thermometer in the egg tub.

Press and seal is rarely necessary, I have never used it.

When you have eggs if you do it sooner the moisture contained in the hatchrite will be gone, also since you are using a substrateless method I would just go with a cheaper medium.

Hatchrite is technically fool proof for those who do not want to mix anything, which is the principle of the substrateless method as well allowing you to use a cheaper medium such as perlite or vermiculite.

As for thermometer get a thermometer/hygrometer which will show humidity as well.
