A couple questions

So, today was feeding day. I got my girl her first ASF. These little critters are FAST..and a bit smarter than mice. I swear, I put a mouse in the box with her, and it will walk right up to her face, as if they didn't even know she was there. I put the ASF in there and they both just stared each other down for a good 5 minutes. She struck at it and missed, because it was so speedy. The rest of the time she would get it cornered and then they'd just stare at each other. She'd flick her tongue at it a few times and then turn around and slither away. Then she'd get it cornered again and do the same thing. It was like she was playing with it. I began to think that she just wasn't interested, so I dropped a towel over the rat to take it out. Before I could grab it, it crawled out from under the towel and hopped from one end of the box all the way over to my BP and started scurrying around. Lilith took advantage of its confusion and finally struck it and ate it.
I'm curious if anybody else has witnessed their BP seemingly "playing" with their prey..or maybe taunting them? I couldn't really tell what she was trying to do when they would just stare at each other...

Any who, on to my second question. I had the ZooMed reptifogger for a while to help keep the humidity up in the cage, but the fan recently went out. I called them for a new fan, but it's taking forever to get here...so I bought some sphagnum moss and mixed it in with her other substrate. The humidity is at about 55-60% with that in there. I've never used it before, so I'm curious how often you have to change it out or if you just re-moisten it? Sorry if that's a noob question... Just curious what other people do.

Ive never had any of my balls "play or taunt" live prey. My live eaters are usually wrapped around the prey no more than 5-10 seconds after prey hits the tub floor.

Using moss to boost humidity I only used it in a humid hide during shed cycle. I use paper towel as substrate so nothing to mix. But ive been under the impression most people used it in a hide and not mixed with substrate. "I could be wrong about that"

That's how she usually is with prey. I'm beginning to think she prefers mice, because she snatches those up as soon as she can. But anytime I've tried a rat, she takes a while. She still eats them, it just takes 5-10 minutes.

Thanks for the info on the moss. I've never used it before, so I assumed you just mixed it in. I didn't put a lot in there, so I could always take it out if this is going to pose any issues to her. I just figured it would be easier than having to spray her cage 15 times a day.

I don't think it'd pose a threat just maybe dry out quicker and not be as effective. Also I know how you feel my normal is afraid of a live rat pup I put it in his tub and it ended up in his hot hide. Snake left yhe hide and ran to cool side! Lol so I just let him have his f/t mice and he snatches them up every time.

Well, you were right. I went to check on the humidity and it had dropped to about 40%. Silly me for not asking questions before purchasing the moss.
I'll remember to use it in a humid hide during shed cycles though. So I guess it wasn't a totally useless purchase.
