Generally, how often do you go up a rat/mouse size?

So I no longer buy mice from Petsmart because their sizes are way too inconsistent. I've been buying from Petco for a while at 2.30 an adult mouse or something like that. Expensive but at least they are the same size. I've noticed they haven't restocked the freezer in about a month and half because the other day I had to dig to the back of the freezer to get a mice his size. That's concerning. I'm thinking it's time I purchased online. Allure is about six months old now and he's gone up a mouse size since I got him at three months. If I buy online I want to move him to rats of equal size and purchase enough to make up for the shipping cost and still save some money. So my question is how often does a regular, every five day, eater go up a food size? I don't know if I should just get the whole thing one size or get mostly his current size and a smaller quantity of the next rat size up or what.

I really need to get a gram scale tomorrow.

I've gotten to the point where mice aren't really even on the radar. My babies are rat weanlings out of the gate, pups a month after that, and are on small smalls now at about 4 months of age.

Re: Generally, how often do you go up a rat/mouse size?

I just have one BP...he's about 6 months old. He's been on small adult rats for about a month now....feeding every 5-ish days. Just last week, I ordered a pack of 15 small adult rats from Loxahatchee. The price was overall cheaper per rat that Petsmart and MUCH better quality. Honestly, I think our BP will be able to eat bigger rats before the 15 are used up....but I'm gonna see how he does. I'll be very surprised if we have to order small adult rats again....I'm thinking the next size up, at least after he polishes off this pack of 15. - now its 14, he just ate. With that said...I'm VERY happy w/ Loxahatchee. Their rats are clean and neatly packed, and very easy to separate to thaw.

    Mine's on smalls right now.
Since the smalls tub at the viv is kind of diversified, I'll just say "a lil bigger" or "a lil smaller" and they'll pick one.
So as she grows I could just ask for a smaller medium or a bigger small basically.

Thanks for the responses! I need to weigh his current mouse size and go from there to compare it with the rat size. Hopefully he makes the switch without problem.

If you need this might be helpful once you get a scale.

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find someone selling the right sized rats frozen within reasonable driving distance of you.

If you need to order and your snake is currently eating adult mice, I'd say an order of weaned rats will last you a while. Let's say a 50 pack would not go to waste. If your snake is still hungry you can always feed a second one - 2 of those is a good size meal for even a full grown adult.

Ok got my scale and he's 255 grams. So 15% of that is about 38g. That puts him in the weaned rat category. So I'll get a bunch of those and a small order of small rats for when he moves up. Thanks for the help!

MrLang- they do sell rats around here but they are just crazy expensive. That's why I haven't switched him over. It's much cheaper to feed mice. The only pets stores I know of within 45 minutes of here are Petsmart and Petco. Their rat prices are nuts.

Where I get my jumbo rats from is $7.00 for 1, I think that's a decent price considering I feed one of those per month. Pretty cheap if you ask me but that's only 1 snake. I guess If you had abunch of big snakes, yeah it could get pricy and would probably want to find a better deal.
