Picture Update: Possible Clown Project (Pic Heavy)

Since it was so nice out today and all 3 of these little guys have shed recently, I just had to bust out the camera.

Sorry, this ended up being pretty pic heavy


First is Zephyr - 1.0 Lemonblast het Clown ~300g










Next, Artemis - 0.1 Pastel PH Clown ~450g








And, Calisto - 0.1 Pastel PH Clown ~300g
I have come to really love this snake. It's not the cleanest or brightest pastel out there, but I love her pattern with her blushing and flames. She is definitely more yellow in person though.

Thank you! And hopefully I really have "gotten in" to them, have a couple years to find out. Can't wait to try and prove out my two pastel ph clown girls. Though if I see the right 100% het female I may not be able to say no to another ....I've been really liking me some lesser lately....

but i personally would avoid relying on possible hets, also i dont like breeding het to het because it produces more possible hets.

so i would say its a very good start, also you have genes that work together with clown very well, like the recently produced pinstripe clown and lemon blast clown (pnstripe pastel clown). But i would seriously consider getting a visible clown, maybe not immediately, but for the second breeding season?

going from producing 25% visible clowns in your clutches (IF poss. hets prove out) and possible 66% hets, up to 50% visible clowns in your clutches and the rest will be 100% het clowns, thats a big step up for such a project. but then, maybe you hatch a visible clown or even a pair of visible clowns in your first season.

Thanks for your input, Kurtilein, and yes I agree with your post. Working with these guys will be my first breeding season with balls, and these animals ended up being a very affordable possible "in" to clowns. Honestly I barely spent more on my lemonblast than most people pick up a non-het for. I really lucked out with that one, and trust it's source - Casey Lazik. I have my fingers crossed that I do produce a visual clown or two to holdback. This also could save me a lot of money even though I'd be able to get into some awesome projects. (Not in this to make money btw, I just love clown ). Regardless I will definitely buy some visuals down the road to branch out and add to the gene-pool.

Personally, I think your first pastel pH will definitely prove out. She has that 'look' and traits common in clown hets.

I don't agree with the not doing het X het, clown hets are fairly easy to pick out, I bet when you produce them you'll have no problems pulling out the real hets from the non hets.

If I saw nice markers on those pastels I'd be all over it
Not everyone can or has the ability to buy homozygous animals.

That Lemonblast het male is smokin, I love what the clown gene did to it ...

Dont get me wrong, i only have economic / practical / statistical reasons to avoid possible het to het or possible het to possible het.

if you breed snakes, you sell snakes, and i would be uncomfortable charging anything extra for possible hets. its ok to charge extra for a 100% het something, but if its 66% het i would be reluctant to assign any monetary value to that, or only a little bit. and if something is 50% possible het for something, i would give that away for free, as a bonus to whatever else the snake has going on.

and a statistical reason: unproven 50% het clown to unproven 50% het clown cuts your chances of hitting a visible clown to 1 in 16, 6.25%.
66% to 66% unproven hets, chances are around 11%. less than half of the 25% chance of proven het to proven het.

of course chances go up as soon as you prove out possible hets or a pair of possible hets.

there is no reason not to do it when it comes to the health or beauty of the animals. None at all. Genetically its totally fine. But i would still avoid it. if i get lets say 8 eggs and no visible clown, id be calculating and worrying for a year, or id just go get a visible clown, or more proven 100% hets.... just not a situation id be aiming for when i care for a project.
