Mites...cripes

Omg...my poor baby girl..noticed her in the water last night..but her eyes were clouding up, so i said to my fiancée, i hope to GOD it's not mites, but we only had her for a month so it might be her thing to soak before a shed..after work got home still soaking..took her out and low and behold. mites..2nd time in my herp hobby/career with these lil buggers..had to be the rat that we gave her. Oh i hate this process

the process isnt that bad.... i just went threw it with my BCC. I also only have 2 snakes compared to your 7. i just cleaned out the tank with reptile spray. put paper towel down and sprayed him down with the reptile spray. he hasnt soaked one day since i treated him. just a few more weeks and he can go back on substrate rather than paper towel.

Yup, Nick's right. Mites are a pain in the patootie, but not the end of the world. Try what I recommended for him - Reptile Spray from Reptile Basics. http://www.reptilebasics.com/mite-killers You can use this in the enclosure and you can spray it directly on your snake. It is much safer and easier to use than PAM.

Oh my gosh, I just had the same problem... but was glad I caught it right away. They give me the willies! I had the teeny juvi mites, so I'm glad it wasn't any adults that could lay eggs... Creepers! I use that same stuff mentioned above, and it is AWESOME. It worked immediately. I also sprayed the tubs (one snake affected, but I treated them all... I'm paranoid lol), rack, and area with PAM. Wishing you good luck that you eradicated them!!

How long does it take to be delivered usually?what should we do in the mean time? Strip the enclosure and bleach everything..

They are species specific. Where did you get the rat?

At the local feed store..usual spot..nothing else changed in the month we had her..wonder where/how mites got to her

Yes, Reptile Basics is super fast. In the meantime, you can soak her in the bathtub in tepid water (only slightly warm to your wrist). This will drown whatever mites are on her and help her feel more comfortable until she can be treated. But the Reptile Spray RBI sells is also referred to as Reptile Relief and some better quality pet stores stock it.

Completely gut out your snake's enclosure and thoroughly wash his hides and water bowl (and any other permanent deco in there). Use the Reptile Spray and spay down/wipe out the enclosure (make sure to get in all the nooks and crannies). Replace the substrate with paper towels. Use a seperate clean tub (or bathtub if your snake is large) and spray down your snake with the same Reptile Spray. Allow him to dry and place him back in his enclosure. Do the same thing with all of your other snakes and their enclosures (you have to assume that your other snakes might also have them. Mites can and will travel and better to be safe than sorry).

Mites can come home on YOU. If you visit anywhere that has reptiles, you have the potential to bring home mites. Mites are extraordinarily resourceful and sometimes it seems as though they just "magically" appear in a collection no matter how careful a keeper is. There's no way to know how your snake got them. He could've had ONE on him when you first got him and the infestation is only now becoming apparent. I treat EVERY new snake as soon as I step through my front door with Reptile Spray. So far, I've been lucky and have not had any mites set up house. I intend to keep it that way, but if you work with snakes long enough, you have to expect to deal with them sooner or later.
