American Alligator
I'm in the process of piecing together an enclosure for an American Alligator. My question is, what are my options for lighting and what exactly are the requirements. I assume they need UVA and UVB but what ratio will they require (keep in mind I'm trying to plan for the future when he grows and get all most everything I'll need now). The extra Zoo Med bulb I have now is 10% UVB 30% UVA full spectrum. Will this be sufficient, or will he need more than that as an adult? If anyone could show me some good products or give any advice it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There aren't a whole lot of "alligator experts" here...but if you're planning for the future when he grows, you need to be thinking more toward a significant outdoor enclosure, rather than what light bulbs you might need. In the meantime, I would suggest you contact Kevin McCurley, at NERD. He's got a fabulous, mature alligator that he keeps outdoor during the warm months, and indoor during the harsh New England winters. He could probably give you a good idea of what kind of set-up is required to keep a grown 'gator.
Good luck with it! When raised right, they are amazing creatures to have!

This is the guy I'd contact about alligator care. Jim is a great guy and has had gators for many years. He knows tons on housing and taming.

I'll be buying two young gators once I get home to raise for meat (I'm sure that I'll do something with their hides, as well). I'm going to save this link for reference at that time!

American Alligator name comes from Lizard. They are very dangerous. The American alligator is fed rats and occasionally chickens and rabbits. American alligators may live to about 50 years in the wild. The average size is 11.2 feet.
