So a couple weeks ago,a buddy of mine asked if I could rehome a South African Rock Python,well I took him/her in,even though they can be aggressive.Well turns out my breeder was interested in the Rock Pythons again,so he offered me a trade for a Red Tail.. I thought I would get a small 2-3 foot juvenile or a baby since they have about 16 babies. I never thought I would get one of the 5+ footers. Even trade! So Rex is about twice the size of the Rock Python,but is such a sweetheart! Rex is close to 6 feet long,and loves to lay around on me if I'm watching tv,or if I'm walking around he enjoys the ride! He has some damaged scales probably from the live jumbo rats,but they could be years old..not too sure,he ate his first meal last week since I got him.A big fat jumbo rat,and I always supervise feedings with my snakes,well Rex bit this rat on the head,and blood spattered all over. (Luckily I decided to feed him in the shower,so he could be stretched out a bit,and its easier for me to supervise) So does anyone else have red tails on f/t? If so,was it an easy swap? I just dont want to have several failed attempts like my BP's. Pictures as soon as I can get them up!

Were you told it wouldn't eat f/t?

If you warm the rat well I bet it will surprise you. Got to try to find out though.

To switch many people start feeding freshly killed and work to f/t. I have switched many of my snakes from live to f/t without much trouble. Even my new rainbow pounded down two rats last week even though the previous owner said they couldn't get it to it f/t. I think it has alot to do with how well the rat is heated and the presentation.

Maybe I have been lucky but I have switched my bp, gtp and brb directly to f/t from live. My hoggy is still playing hardball.

Red tails should be easier to get on f/t than BPs. I agree with KMG, it's all in how it's heated and presented. I usually don't have a problem getting my snakes to switch from live to f/t (even my BPs). I have one BP that I was told only ate live ASF but she takes f/t rats no problem for me.

I also feed my boas in their cage and don't have a problem with them at all. With my boas I will actually just drop the f/t rat in and it's their job to find it. I started doing this because floating rats really freaked my female out when I first got her. She spent 15 minutes missing at me but wouldn't take the rat until I dropped it an walked away.

Give f/t a try with him. You may be surprised with how well it goes.

Thanks! I only did live for the first feeding,didn't want to stress him out too much,since he's been on live ever since my breeder has gotten him(as a owner surrender),so I'll give it a try next week with his rat! Is it ok to feed him every 2 weeks on a jumbo rat?

Pictures???? You can't talk about a new snake without pictures..... I don't think boas are as picky about their food as balls.
