Breeding Start-Up Question
Good Morning,
I'd like to get into BP breeding and I'm aiming to start next season and because of that, I would like to skip the process of getting a hatchling/juvenile female and raising her up and instead purchase a breeding size or proven breeder female. Our male is a pastel and we weren't very smart at the time and should've purchased a female at that point and we would be better prepared for this lol!!
So here's my question, breeding size female morphs can be quite expensive from what I've seen so I'm thinking of just getting a normal however pastel x normal isnt going to give me too many options to start building my collection up so I'm thinking of getting a double gene morph as a local breeder has a Pewter that I like. Buying the pewter male and a proven breeder normal female would be my best option to get started and build my collection up right? The Pewter male would also give me lots more breeding options down the road when paired with other morphs is what I'm thinking.
Thanks!
Ryan

That doesn't sound too bad, but a pewter is a cinnamon pastel, so really you are only adding one more gene to what you have. I'm not sure what your budget is or what morphs you like, but perhaps another cinny combo (or any combo without pastel) would help you build up your collection a little faster.

Re: Breeding Start-Up Question
Thanks! I was definitely thinking along that line. I've been looking for something without pastel but all I'm finding is lemon blast's and bumblebees (and now the pewter). I would love to find a Jigsaw, a Spinner or a Cinna Bee so I might hold out to keep looking for one of those.

I would just keep searching the classifieds until you find exactly what you want. Don't settle for anything less than something you are in love with.
You will know the snake when you see it Its like it is calling to you "buy meeeeee"

Welcome, I am just getting into breading as well.
I am taking a diff approach. I purchases all younger snakes, as seen in my sig. I plan on raising them up and if one or all of the females ate ready for next season GREAT!
It's not a race in BP breading and if I need to wait longer so be it.
By next season they will average 14-15 months old.
Congrats and good luck.

Re: Breeding Start-Up Question
Do not give up on the pastel gene. Even if you have a clutch with a lot of pastels, hopefully one or two will be females. Pastel females can form a solid foundation on which to build future breeding projects. Just my opinion, not preaching.

If it were me..... I would skip the Pewter male and get a Pewter female!
To my knowledge, for some reason, a Super Pastel Cinnamon (or Pastel Pewter), has never been created.
Pastel Male x Cinnamon/Pastel Female = Cinnies, Pastels, Super Pastels, Pewters, Super Pastel Cinnies.
Work towards something like this if you feel like it - http://www.worldofballpythons.com/mo...ter-pinstripe/
Then, if you end up with a Super baby, you're able to immediately inject that gene into any future project that you want.
I'll let you look up the price of a breeder size Pewter female, but I'm imagining about 750 bucks.
Supers and visual recessives are smart buys if you ask me. And you've got to think at least 3 years down the road.
I'm assuming you've tried looking at some big-name breeder websites and not just looked locally?
I just started a thread on Pewters as well, lots of pictures. See if you can find it and check that out.

A super pastel cinny is called a Sterling. There are plenty of them out there

if you wanted to breed by next season i would recommend you buy 2 adult female normals and 1 male super of something you like as soon as possible...
if you like pewter get a Sterling.. if you like bumble bee's get a killer bee
you could probably get all 3 snakes for under $1000
with a super male you wont produce any normals and you could hold back your females for future projects

Thats some great advice! Ill have to start looking at other breeders too. I'm in Canada so the market is a bit smaller and I was thinking I'd have to stick to local but I will take a look and see what is out there. The Pewter male I am looking at is $450 for a 2012 so if I could find a breeder size female for $750, Id definitely jump on that lol!!
