    Angry Colombian

Ok I know the basics of snake keeping. And I know that I picked up a stressed out snake. My new Anery girl is angry. The people that had her last didn't handle her much. She had a squished tail from built up sheds. Her temp wasn't right. Her humidity wasn't right. The only thing they did right was feeding. So I have had her since last Saturday. I fed her on Sunday and I gave her till today to digest. I know that I should give her time to adjust to the new surroundings but I took her out anyway. She was hissing at me and my wife and grew very defensive. How long should I give her till I handle her again? I also have another question. I fed her a weaned rat on Sunday. She weighs 380 grams. After I fed her my wife thinks that she was still hungry. I say just feed her one appropriate sized meal. My wife thinks that we should feed her 2 smaller rats. What would be better for her? Sorry for the questions but I am new to boas. Thanks in advance.

One appropriate meal should be fine. Boas are so different. Mine, has been mellow as can be since day one. They don't seem to stress like a bp. We took him to a school show and tell when we had only had him for a couple months, he ate, same day. So I don't know if letting her settle in, or handling more would help her adjust more. I have read with boas that frequent handling helps to keep them chill. Maybe feed again, let her be for 2-3 days, then try to handle. It may take awhile. If she has been kept in poor conditions, for her to learn she is ok being handled. Keep at it, boas are awesome!

I would suggest feeding her 1 appropriately sized meal. As far as the handling goes, keep handling sessions limited to just a few minutes starting out, and gradually increase the time. Whenever one of mine hisses, I make a point to handle them....

One feeder per meal would be my recommendation too.

For the hissing, when she starts up with that don't put her away: keep her out until she calms down and stops hissing/striking/etc. My Hog can be a bit of a turd, and when I take her out sometimes she's hissing up a storm open with her mouth open and bluffing. I don't put her away until she's calmed and she's been acting much better from it: she's gradually getting out of her drama queen attitude. Just keep working with her and she'll calm down, it may take a few days, weeks, or months.
