Re: oh Petsmart...
LoL.
Yeah, the vet that I took Monty to, the only reptile doctor in Huntsville, works in a Petsmart. Thank God the guy actually sounded like he knew what he was talking about and had some previous experience because the rest of the ordeal was pretty sketchy. Apparently the girl working the front counter hadn't had anyone bring a snake in there in over four years. She was extremely excited. The nurse, while he didn't seem freaked out by Monty, would not touch him. The girl working the register was totally freaked out.
Personally, I think me, with about two whole weeks of experience caring for one, know more about ball pythons than everyone apart from the vet combined in that store. If we, as a community, might volunteer to help big stores like Petsmart, it might help. Just print off caresheets that they could hand to the customer when they want to buy a snake. That'd be a start if they'd be willing to take them.

Urates are Uric acid (the white stuff). Reptiles have solid and liquid urine.

Nah they arent. Reptiles bodies compact uric acid (urine) into these white pellets to conserve fluids. They can pee liquid like you or i would though too.
Are the white pellets the equilvalent of kidney stones in humans? Anyone know?

Hell no they aren't like a kidney stone. I am sitting in the hospital right now waiting for surgery tomorrow morning for a 9mm kidney stone all doped up on morphine. Terrible experience

While there is no Petsmart here in the Toledo area we do have Petco. Fortunately one of the stores has a clerk(?) that has had his ball python for 20 plus years. Kind of rare these days.

Wow, that is rare. The lady that used to work there, that actually knew what she was talking about actually keeps and breeds snakes.

When I first got interested in keeping Snakes years ago I was told this or heard it somewhere and believed it. Reason being is because at the time I was still living with my parents so there was no way I was getting a snake and so I hadn't done any research.
A lot of people that go to big pet stores to get pets and supplies believe these things because 95% of them don't do any research of their own.
I wish we could do something to change this but unless someone writes an angry letter to the company saying to educate their employees better in the care of the animals they sell then I don't think it'll ever change. Maybe make a point that healthy animals sell better and will make the customer a returning customer?
I dunno.

I feel your pain. I've had 7 kidney stones. Went through lithotripsy on one that was around 9mm and then had a stent for 2 weeks. WORST PAIN ever. I pray that I never have another one but I know I will. I hope you feel better soon. Oh yeah, MORPHINE was fantastic.
