Rats..leave the boy in?
I have a successful asf breeding program and have no problems. However I am going the start breeding regular rats in a rack system and I have heard both sides. Leave the boy in with moms and babies or take him out? I would appreciate any suggestions or comments.

I've never had a male do any harm to the babies but I did have a few scuffed up pups from mammas playing tug-o-war with them. Their maternal instincts are pretty extreme and sometimes they aren't the best at sharing duties with the others.

I leave my males in too and don't have any problems with them. Obviously keep an eye out, some males can be trouble, but the only real reason to remove most males is to give the females a break between litters - especially important if you have a small colony or low production, and need to keep your females in great shape for a long time.

Leave the boy in.
If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies.

I leave the males and and most of mine will even help care for the pups. I've seen several of them cleaning the babies or lying with them while the female eats.

I know you already got answers but We actually take the babies and the mom out and they go in one of the nursery tubs. We have a six tub rat rack, the top two are nurseries and the bottom 4 are breeders. Works good for us. Plus it's easier clean up.

I leave the boys in. I have never had a male hurt the pups, and even see them helping to care for them. For me it is also easier this way, and takes up less room (my space is limited)
