Angry High Kill Shelter and General Shelter Discussion

I was looking through some ads on craigslist and I have grown SICK of seeing ads that say "I've adopted this puppy to save it" and "This puppy was in a high kill shelter".

Both the Shelters I have worked at have had a minimum age at which a dog can be put down. One was 8 months and the other was a year.

I believe people are depriving puppies of going straight to a good home and making it easier for older dogs to be put down. Mostly because puppies would get adopted in like 48 hours of arrival and we put down older dogs almost DAILY!

Why not adopt an older dog to try and find a home for. Maybe I'm wrong? What's your view? Do you think all shelters should have a minima age? Do you think there should be a better way of shelter management?

    Thoughts?

Unfortunately to many people are not responsible pet owners and don't research the breed they buy or just general pet care causing an over population of unwanted animals and unwanted babies. I wish all animals could be saved but the fact of the matter is it is just not possible. I think if we could put certain people down the animals and society in general would improve. We have far to many useless irresponsible people in the world today. Going through life looking for handouts without a care in the world. In my experience (my work) these are the large majority of people who don't spay/neuter, vaccinate, register, or properly fence or maintain their pets that leaves the burden to the city to fix their mess. I don't need them.

As far as a minimum age, or maximum. I don't think that should matter as much as what type of temperament the animal has. Some animals are just to far out from ever making a good pet regardless of age. And still no matter how good a animal might be the shelter can only handle so much and good ones will die.

This kinda turned into a rant. It's a hot button for me.

Because older dogs tend to have behavior issues.

a friend of mine is giving away their 3 year old male boxer. why? she claims they don't have the time for her. She doesn't even really work, so I don't know where the "we don't have time" comes from. I really want to put her in her place, but it will be a lesson she will have to learn on her own.

Another friend of mine...(where do I meet these people??) They got a white boxer, but I guess it's energy level was too extreme for them. So, they gave it up to a couple that have a boxer outside the city. So, about 6-9 months later, they get themselves a "bull dog". Apparently, it wasn't a full 100% bull dog, but a bull dog boxer mix...so, they gave that one up too, and traded for an actual bull dog. The only reason they wanted a 100% bull dog, was because they are "lazy".

^^^Owners like that, give shelters a bad rep.

It's a never ending thing with ad sites and "the family is allergic" - "we don't have time", and sadly, the pets suffer due to that.

I have 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 11 snakes, and 60+ rats. You make time. Period.
