Re: Do Ball Pythons have a sense of hearing?
Yes, they do. They actually hear through vibrations which connect their jaw to an inner ear. Here is a small article that describes it more.

They may be able to hear you but they're undoubtedly going to ignore everything you say.
[especially if they've escaped and you're desperately searching for them]

Since Alice's slitherabout, I check them all like I've got OCD.
When I wake up, before I go to bed, if I leave the house, when I come home again and about every couple hours in between.
[and most of them are in the really great locking tubs I got at WalMart]
Alice is on my coffee table in his condo/Supermax prison where I can see him all the time.
[I really don't trust that snake any more]

Deaf Harvey
I've worked with four snakes before Harvey, and they would all respond to exterior noise. Harvey does not. At all. I can shout at him and he will not move. But, if I put him on my neck, he reacts to the vibration feeling in his body. So, I have a deaf snake.
I noticed that he was different right away and I didn't know why. When he was 6 months old there was a loud noise in my apartment that made me flinch and he didn't move! I clapped loud right in front of his face and he didn't move.
I am really sure that his connection from jaw to inner ear doesn't really work.
I love my deaf snake. He is now two years old, and he is actually the sweetest little guy ever. I've spent lots more time on him to get him to respond visually but it's been worth it!
