    Another Rack Build

    Hey everyone!

As the title states i am getting ready to build another rack this time. I am planning on building it similar to commercial grade racks where i can fit both 15 quart and 32 quart tubs within the rack (32 quart tubs sideways). Now i am making this thread because i really don't feel like using melamine again as it is very heavy, not to mention if the wooden material itself gets wet it is prone to swelling and rotting. So this time around i am trying to find a different material that will fit my needs. Really all i am looking for is something sturdy, thinner (as the melamine sheets are thick and heavy), and something that will not harm the snakes.

I have seen dozens of homemade racks and i know that some one on here can share some very useful information!

So let me know! What material do you use for your racks and WHY!

    Thanks ahead of time guys!

I've seen alot of xpvc used for racks. That's what I'll be using when I make mine.

    Hope this helps,

Here's the rack I'm in the process of building. It's not very thin, but it's pretty sturdy. It holds 28/41 qt bins, so a little larger than you need, but it's still an idea: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...80#post1885080

    Re: Another Rack Build

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm thinking that i may just be going through animal plastics and buying one of their economy racks. For the price of the xpvc boards and shipping its more reasonable to just buy a rack, at least from the website mentioned above. Considering i used two melamine boards from home dept, i would need at least two boards of that xpvc which is totaling around (180$ without shipping).

So i would think that the following materials are out of the question:
    • Melamine Boards.
    • XPVC.

I am going to try to contact the customer support over at Animal Plastics and see if they can answer some of my questions. One of the biggest questions being what tubs will fit the racks they supply besides the recommended sterilite tubs, as these are often outdated tubs.

Until then if anyone else has made a custom rack out of another type of wood let me know!

Here's another link I think will help you out a lot of you decide not to use xpvc:

    http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=97598

If you have the money, I would suggest building your own. In order to make it significantly cheaper than buying one already built, you need to make sure to buy the xpvc from a local manufacturer/distributor. Getting rid of the shipping significantly reduces the cost of the rack... Obviously. If you still don't wanna use xpvc, I suggest you take a look at the link above. When I build my racks I will be using that link for my hatchlings and possibly young juveniles (6qt/12qt tubs) and I will be buying 2 xpvc sheets that can hold nine 41qt tubs or eighteen 32 qt tubs. I will have to buy the tubs first to make sure tether dimensions add up but from my understanding and research it will.

    Hope this helps,
    SC
