To sound mean so they can scare away a potential predator.

Snakes hiss to warn you away, try and scare you or because they are angry, but if you own a snake and they hiss pick him/her up otherwise they will know to hiss and you will leave them alone.
Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened.

It's funny when they hiss especially ball pythons. Then you just put your hand behind their striking mouth and wella. You have an angry snake hand!

When they hiss just pick them straight up, otherwise they will think every time they will hiss you will leave them alone, you don't want this to happen

Why don't you want it to happen? I have one that hisses all the time, he doesn't strike, he just hisses. I just tell him he's a big scarey snake. Handling him doesn't change his propensity for hissing.

Yeah, I have a couple that constantly hiss...I don't see why it's a bad thing?

I am taking care of a little tiny normal female that hisses every time I go to pick her up. At a whole 85grams it is pretty hilarious.
