Caught between a clutch of eggs and a honeymoon?!?!?

So I've known this for a while but have started to get a little concerned about it. So myself (interloc) and my fiance (jschwe) are getting married on August 18th and we have our first clutch of eggs due to hatch on August 20th. That is day 55 after she laid and she laid 39 days after she shed. I want to cut the eggs on the 17th so I can know what the babies will be and also so they have an escape route if they dont develop an egg tooth for some reason.

So I guess I have a few questions. Will they be ok to cut then? If they hatch while we are gone will they be ok in the incubator on the vermiculite for a couple of days? Also, I have never felt comfortable with popping because I've never done it. I'm comfortable probing but is it safe or standard practice to probe babies? I guess I'm a but confused as to my course of action. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks friends!

I dont think transporting the eggs an hour away would be a god idea. Thanks tho! I will defs keep you in mind. I do have a friend I remembered about that may be able to help. Again thanks! And congrats on your little normal girl eating!

Hi, i think cutting your eggs at day 52 would be ok. Just don't hack into them and try to cut as little veins as possible. I cut all my eggs at day 53 and have never had any issues with them. I kinda had the same issue that i went out of town, since the babies are already breathing air before they completely come out of the egg it should be no problem leaving them in the bater for couple days. This is just from my personal experience. And as for the probing i hear of people probing babies all the time. Just be gentle. And you should have no issues. Hope this helps

Myself, I would just wait until you get back. How long is the honeymoon, a week? If so then no worries! Just open it before you leave just to give them some air. A normal fitting lid is not airtight so it will let in some air. I just had the same situation, I left on July 21st and the eggs were due July 23rd. I got home July 28th and they were fine. Well I could set up a 24 hour live feed using webcams and a server. If you really want to it wouldnt be hard lol and would cost nothing. You can easily access it from cell phone or laptop.

Don't cut them, wait until you get back. If you cut them, then you open the eggs to problems with bacteria (warm moist environment) and you will not be home to handle any potential problems. If you can fit it, place a small water bowl in the egg box. That way, when they come out of the egg, they can get a drink. Many people leave babies in the incubator until after the first shed. So, you should be fine.

I don't think I would cut them either. If they take a long time to come out on their own they could try out or grow bacteria since they are exposed. Just make sure you have a lot of water in the substrate so they can drink that when they hatch.
