Kennel Cough or Dog Cold ???????

OK here is the quick run down. Yesterday morning my wife and I were woken up by our 1 yr old lab who sounded like she was coughing up something and snorting. She stopped for a little until she drank some water and it happened again. . We panicked a little bit and took her to the emergency room. There she was absolutely fine until she drank water and it happened. They took an xray and evaluated her and said they think it was kennel cough and have her on doxy. Now with ,kennel cough, its contagious so we took cooper(our other dog a 7 month old lab/pit mix) and put him in the basement. Well its now 8pm the following day and the dog seems fine, no coughing, no snorting , no runny nose, and she is running, eating and drinking just fine. So we decided to let cooper upstairs. We think maybe she just had a cold of some sort. When we called the vet they said it is possible but keep her on the doxy still 3 times a day. Anyone have any input or have experienced this or anything similar ??

I know that the vaccine for kennel cough is about as old as I am, and is not terribly effective anymore. I also know that kennel cough rarely causes any serious issues with dogs, and if you keep up with the anti-biotics, you'll likely have a dog with no lasting issues. Keep an eye on both dogs, make sure they're breathing and eating normally, and you should be just fine. It sounds bad, but very rarely is. Most dogs get over it quickly on their own, without any medication.

Our dog caught it from our old roommate's new dog she got, and was fine within about a week and a half, without medication. She did need to treat her dog though, which was a much much younger puppy, and a more sensitive system.

Re: Kennel Cough or Dog Cold ???????

Kennel cough is a good possibility. Has your pup had the Bordatella vaccine? Been to the dog park or around other dogs lately? Sometimes when dogs get kennel cough, they seem to be recovering and the owners stop treating the problem, but the dog is still sick. You may not see any issues if the dog is calm, but it can be pretty scary if the dog gets excited, starts running around, and then you have those symptoms again. So don't be fooled into thinking your pup is healthy - keep giving the medication even if you aren't seeing any more problems.

It been really hot here so the dogs havnt been to the park in about 2 weeks. The only thing I can think of is I took her to petco to get her Rabies, 1 yr booster , and the bordatella done. She possibly got it there. I just dont think its Kennel cough considering she has no symptoms today 24 hours later. Ill continue to give her the meds just incase but all the doxy is for is to make sure she doesn't get pneumonia or stuff like that.
