I also recommend a corn snake. They don't get too big, there are some awesome colour strains out there. They are very docile and easy to keep

What do you mean by "kinda on the smaller size"? And what do you mean by "cool looking" - bright colors, odd pattern, etc.?

Retics stay small, compared to a buss . I would say look at ball, corns, hogs, garters, milks, any colubrids.
