Surprised nobody has said this but ball pythons cruise around a lot and 'aren't afraid of anything' when they're stressed out. My established snakes do come out and poke around here and there, but not like clockwork and never during the day. You chose him because he is active and not afraid, but that behavior could indicate that the animal was already stressed out in the breeder's care. Don't handle the snake much until it calms that behavior down.
You can try to feed, but if it fails don't try again for at least 3 or 4 days. I had 4 out of 5 snakes take a meal for me within 2 days of getting them - and all of them were F/T for the first feeding and coming from eating live. Anything's possible.
