Hee hee, I drug a friend out tad-pole hunting once. She'd never been. I was up to my waist in the pond while she only went in just past her ankles, and quickly ran out, claiming there were leeches in the water. I told her not to be ridiculous, that leeches didn't live in our area, and climbed out with my catch. At that point she started screaming and pointed at my legs. They were covered in leeches.
Whoopsies!

Oh my goodness... I am cringing and laughing so hard at these responses. Haha. The cockroach one had me almost choking on my water as I took a drink while reading.

That's a very nice thing you did for her! But gawd, ticks, fleas, mites.....Ekkk!!!!
That is why I have Prevent-A-Mite for my snakes, and Ivermectin Paste for my rat colonies. There may be bugs on some of you mugs, but there ain't no bugs on me....LOL Remember that commercial jingle?

Whoopsies!
The pond above my house has them.
[found out the hard way]
Last year I went back to a local crick to take photos and noticed odd little 'holes' in the mud under an overhanging tree.
So naturally, like an over-curious idiot, I waded in, thinking it might be crayfish nests or something.
Nope.
Leeches.
As soon as I stepped into their area, they came swarming out after my feet.
YIKES!

Ewewewewewew! All of these nasty little parasite stories are making me itchy and fidgety. Yuck!
Thanks be to the gods that I've never had mites in my collection. I have had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing them, and let me tell you...if your snake has them...you'll figure it out pretty quickly. I picked up one of the hatchling balls at a petstore. He seemed a little lethargic and I noticed this strange little black bug crawling on him. I flicked it off and started looking him over. I had no idea what it was. I then noticed strange moving black spots under the scales of his chin. Then another adult mite crawled across his back and I immediately put the poor creature back and doused my arms and hands in hand sanitizer.
After informing the owner, I went home and took a long hot shower and did some laundry. I was terrified I would bring them home with me. Of course, I was nowhere near my snake room for the rest of the day...but still...it creeped me out.
Ever since I was in high school and we had an awful tick infestation in my house...anything that is small, black and creepy-crawly freaks me out. It was BAD. Granted, they seemed to be infesting everyone's houses in my hometown that summer, but still. It was a little embarrassing. I would probably have a heart attack if I ended up with mites in my house now.
Freaky Recap About the Ticks to Follow:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I walked outside, the ticks would swarm onto my feet and legs. And I mean SWARM. Ten or twenty I'd find in only a couple minutes. I couldn't pick anything up or walk through the yard. They'd get on me. The poor dogs were having an awful time of it despite being dipped regularly and treated with expensive flea and tick medicine. The ticks had completely infested a couch in the living room...they were in the crevices of the leather cushions and when we flipped the couch over, we learned that the couch was their nest! They were in pictures frames, on clothes, in carpet, corners, stuffed animals, on the walls, literally EVERYWHERE! It started as finding one in a picture frame and within a couple days we started finding them everywhere! If you have one or two...you probably have a lot more. And that's just terrifying. I had yet to find any in my room...so I thought I was safe. Especially in my 6ft high loft bed. But one night I felt something crawling on me under the covers and found a tick. I was so freaked out I couldn't sleep and then took my skink to live at my grandmothers until after the house was fumigated. That was the worst few months of my life. Seriously. I HATE HATE HATE ticks. And anything that remotely resembles them...mites included.
Ewwwwww!
