    Field Herping in NH

I'm going camping in NH from Tuesday-Saturday and I'd like to get out and see some herps! I've looked on the Dept of F&G website for indigenous species in NH. I've never been "field herping" per se, I usually just find milk snakes around me. Would I have to go off trails and such when hiking to find them? Do I look under rocks and logs and such? The timber rattlesnake is the only venomous species up there, so I don't mind getting too dirty. From what I can tell they really only bite if stepped on or harassed. We're going to be in the Ossipee area, anyone know of any specific locations for some good herp sightings?

Since its spring most garter snakes and such species should be emerging from their underground "burrows" where they hibernated over the winter you should be able to find some of them pretty easily. Also if youre camping anywhere near water then turtles and frogs should be pretty easy to find too. Under rocks and logs, or in hollowed out/rotten logs are good places to look like you said. Whatever you find, be sure to take pics!

On a side note: just yesterday i found a baby black rat snake in my yard without trying, so that tells you how easy it should be to find something lol. I had an older half log hide that i didnt wanna use any more so i put it outside in one of our flower gardens as a hideout for toads or whatever. Well i walked by it yesterday and a tiny black snake shot out from underneath it and into the bushes. I only saw a flash of it so im only guessing the species. Still cool though!
