im planning in doing my egg box this year of getting vermiculite and putting those crates on top of it. but i was wondering how wet does the substrate have to be for this? and do you need the press and seal? thanks

I poured water into my substrate to where its almost puddled up. There shouldn't be any condensation in the tub though. And no press and seal shouldn't be needed.

    Re: Egg Box Setup?

Some people do it with water only, so use a lot. I don't think condensation on the inside of the tub is a big deal as long as it's not collecting on the top and dripping on the eggs. Whether or not you need Press n' Seal would depend on how well your tubs maintain moisture...if not well, you may need it.

In a 7 quarts tub I do 6 cups of vermiculite and 4 cups of water this way enough water but not too much that could cause sloshing around or the crate to sink in.

Condensation is minimum and only get heavy the last week of incubation.

I NEVER use press and seal.

I would not recommend using water alone has water sloshing around is the main issue.
