Anyone use PE2 temp gun
Been using a cheapo $10 temp gun but wanted something more accurate. Well cheapo & acurite are about .2-.5 degrees off. PE-2 is 4 degrees lower than both cheapo & acurite. The directions talk about "emissivity". It's set at the default .95 so assuming I have to mess with this? Help on their site has a link but it pertains to settings for various metals.
Thanks

Re: Anyone use PE2 temp gun
Are the batteries low? That can cause it to read off. Also be sure to keep the lens clean. In the PE-2, that is the plastic piece recessed on the front. A qtip and rubbing alcohol is all you need.
The E setting should stay at 95E for all of your reptile temp uses.
But also consider the Distance to Spot ratio (D:S). On less expensive units, it is typically 1:1. That means at one inch away, you are measuring a one inch spot. At 6 inches away, a 6 inch spot.
With the PE-2, the D:S ratio is 6:1, so at 6 inches away just a ONE inch spot. At a foot away, a 2 inch spot.
You could see a difference in measurement if one unit is measuring a 6 inch area, and the other just a one inch area, make sense?

Hey, thanks for replying! It's brand new, just got it today. I will try another set of batteries just to be safe & clean it.
It does make sense about the area which it reads. I will just have to fiddle with it some more.
