First Vet trip with a BP

I had to take my dinker girl to the vet yesterday as she developed an abscess on her bottom right jaw that was misfiguring the whole right side of her head. Anyhow, after the doc lanced it and squeezed the puss out, she is now alot happier. Giving her the antibiotic ointment he prescribed twice daily so hopefully she'll be back to normal in no time. That is the good, the bad...I had to run into one of those "What is that, oh my word, that is such a disgusting creature!" types.

This older lady (I'll put her in her 60s-70s) just wouldn't stop. I just smiled and said it is a ball python and it is harmless, you're dog there is more of a threat. I also corrected her on her assumption that it will turn into a giant snake etc. I didn't have to say much more as the vet tech and another woman in the waiting area chimed in as I think they could see that I was getting a little agitated with her. It may have been when I told her..."You know....you sound alot like my mother!" (I've been educating mom for the past 3 years about BPs and at least she's come to accept that I have them). Anyhow, this lady was a real gem. Funny thing is, I met another old couple on the way out and they were the exact opposite, inquisitive, friendly and not abrasive towards me at all. Just thought I'd share the experience.

Well sounds to me like you handled it pretty well. I work in a nursing home so i would consider myself an expert when it comes to dealing with annoying old people

Re: First Vet trip with a BP

My mom freaked out when I brought my first one home in 1982 I believe it was. Soon she was asking for her own. After a break, I am back in the BPs and mom just asked me which one was coming home with her. She might be a good quarantine home...hmmmm...

It took a long time for me to figure out that most people with opinions don't want to be confused by facts.

Sounds like you did a great job countering her ignorance with the truth.
