First battle with mites in over 15 years, any advice would be appreciated....!
Hey everybody,
I picked up a Pied female from a local show a few weeks ago and appearently she was carrying some baggage. I noticed my bumblebee in the tank below her soaking which is rather unusual and then confirmed there were mites when I smashed one I pulled off of the Pied and it was full of blood. I already have two cans of prevent-a-mite ready to go however I do have a few questions.
I have 8 snakes in this room and want to treat the whole area to make sure the problem goes away. I am aware of removing the snakes, getting rid of all of the substrate and using papertowels and bleaching the caves, but I wasn't sure if I needed to rinse the PAM after treating the enclosures....
Do I just wipe the tanks and spray the PAM and leave it?
How long until I can put the snakes back in the enclosures after using?
How many times do it use the PAM?
Thanks in advance for all help!!!

Personally I like the Pam. No don't rinse the Pam after you spray it. Do absolutely follow the directions to a t. I'd also keep the aspen instead of pt. they'll move through the subsadrate and it'll keep killing the mites. Treat every 30 days until the mites are gone.

Oh also keep the snakes and bowls out until the Pam is dry and you can't smell it anymore.

I recently posted about P-A-M being dangerous to some species. Reply #5 listed BRB as a risk for Pam, and I see you have one in your Sig list.

That being said, I do keep a can of Pam and if I had an outbreak, I would use it.

I can tell you from personal use that there is no risk at all for using PAM on a BRB enclosure. When you spray the enclosure do not use too much spray. I have emailed the company to ask about applying the product and was told that the most is 1 sec per ft of enclosure. With that application it would take 15 mins to dry but I usually wait 45 just to be safe. The chemical is very strong in its liquid form and can cause severe neurological problems. Once the product is dry it becomes totally safe for your animal. Just spray and leave the PAM to dry on its own without wiping it around. I put water in there with the animal the day I use the treatment and have never an issue and was advised to do so by the company.
On a side note if you have any tarantulas or insect pets remove them from the room that the snakes will be in after the treatment. Good luck

Operation Mite Destruction has been completed! All old substrate removed, tanks wiped out, new substrate added, PAM sprayed, hides and bowls bleached and all snakes soaked in Dawn and sprayed with Mite-Off....! What a project with 8 snakes. Also got a yellow bug bar to hang in the room just in case. I'll keep updating as the week goes... Thanks everyone!
