You don't actually think I was serious about the glue, do you?

BTW, I wouldn't swing a rat by the tail either but that's just me.

    Here are your options

You feed live responsibly and this also include being human to the prey and respect the prey (whether you like rodents or not.

Or you don't feed live you feed P/K or F/T.

Or you don't own a snake if you are incapable to simply perform both of the above.

Re: How to tie a rat's mouth?

Feed your snake f/t or p/k. A live rat deserves the same respect as any other living creature. Perhaps you should not be keeping snakes if you have an issue with the humane treatment of animals.

The correct way to bind a rat's mouth:

First, make an appointment with a qualified surgeon, preferably one with battlefront wartime experience. They work better under pressure.

Take the rat that is going to be fed off to the hospital. Now, here's the tricky part - getting past the red-tape so you ONLY pay for the actual surgery to hold the mouth shut, and NOT pay for any anesthesia or ancillaries.

Pay the book keeper under the table - a $50 bill should do the trick, and have him/her ONLY submit the claim for the surgeon and the time for the O.R.

After recovery, you should have a rat with a nice, clean sutured mouth - ready to feed with no harm to your snake. And it only cost you $2500!

THAT, my friend, is a BARGAIN!

In all fairness to those who have responded you did ask a crazy question so you got some very sarcastic answers.

Yes it is possible that your snake could get hurt from feeding live, but there are ways to do it safely, such supervising feedings and being prepared to step in should the rat get a hold of the snake. There is always a chance the snake could make a bad grab when feeding live, like what happened to your friend's snake, but these things just happen. You can't tie a rats mouth closed.

Your best bet it is to feed frozen/thawed or pre-killed. All but one of my snakes will take frozen/thawed for me. All you need is to make it warm enough, or use pre-killed, and then use feeding tongs to make it seem like it's alive but laying it down and grabbing it by the scruff of the neck and moving it.

and keep trying p/k or f/t, if your bp doesnt eat the first time, try again next week, and then the next week, and so on. dont just give in, your snake will eat a dead rodent eventually

Re: How to tie a rat's mouth?

You have some good answers above about pre-killing and being cautious, but I will help your cause a bit... it's odd, but I know of a pet store Owner that use to do this for his Burmese, EXCEPT it was with rabbits, I volunteered at his store l to get experience with the snakes he sold, and one day I caught him feeding his Burmese, he grabbed a rabbit and hit the poor thing against the wall staggering it, he then tied the rabbits mouth shut with a rope and held it in the cage where the snake could wrap around the body but not the head and waited, after the Burmese suffocated the rabbit he did one of the stupidest things I've ever seen and stuck his hand inside the snakes cage and untied the rope then pulled his hand out like it never happened... don't do that, that's an accident waiting to happen, and just purely stupid. No offense to you personally as you most likely want to just keep your snake safe. But as other people have said, just feed it a staggered prey, or pre kill it. I know how it feels, our adult female ball and our Burmese only eat live, and even with proper safety precautions an accident can always happen. Good luck..

There is just no reason to tie a rats mouth. If you are feeding that large of a meal use prekill or ft methods. Prekill usually works best for the snakes that prefer live bc the rat twitches and is still warm. In all honesty even my largest girls don't eat jumbo rats and those are the ones that can usually do the most damage. I feed smaller more frequent meals for one of those reasons.
