    quick question

Just wondering. I have read lots and lots, but this is what I am not sure of. How long or are there signs if a pair is going to lock? Like should they at least pretend to like eachother first. I put my pastel in with his date, and they both just took a side and layed still. The male slowly crept over, and as soon as his tongue touched her back, she buckled and he flinched, and retreated. This guy has no game.....so, my question, if he doesnt make the move, should I give up and try again in a few weeks, or keep on trying....How long until they lock for the first time?

It all depends. It wont hurt to just leave them together. Just give them 3-4 days take him out for a couple days and then reintroduce them, keep doing this as long as you would like. I just put all mine together last night and all the males are just laying on top of the females today(who knows what they did last night). Give it some time they breed for months before laying eggs. Goodluck.

Agreed. As long as they aren't acting stressed it won't hurt to keep them together as long as you give them periodic breaks.

Some just aren't as aggressive breeders as others. A lot of the action will take place when they are alone, usually at night when they feel safest. Most locks you probably won't see. What kind of substrate are you keeping them on? If its newspaper look out for spots of dried on sperm. That is a good indicator that they are simply shy breeders. Another method you can try is introducing another male or a fresh shed from another male. That seems to drive them wild.

Typically if a female doesn't scent up the tub fairly soon after the male enters there will be no courting going on during that visit.
This may not be every case but 90% of the time "in my experience" if they sit side by side for 24 hours they aren't going to be doing anything "wild" even if you let them sit 3-4 days together.

Low pressure systems moving in seem to help put them in the mood and placing males in with freshly shed females also seems to help some and I've used sheds before from other males with limited success, but I can't say for certain it was the reason the pair locked.

I figure if a male is just going to sitting in a tub curled up with a female on the other side of the tub he may as well be with a different female or resting in his own tub.

I look for scenting as a means to see if the female is interested.
I wouldn't pull a male right away if I didn't see the female scent the tub, but if I put a male in with a female at night and the next day there has been no scenting and they are still sitting apart, normally I would then pull him for rest or place him with a different female.
