Hi everybody im new here although ive been lurking about for a while
Im planning on getting my first ball python in the next few weeks. Im currently setting up the viv for him. I think im an addict-i just got my first snake (amel cornsnake called Jaffa) at the end of june and already im going for another one. I also have a 'dream list' which includes-a sand boa, a zigzag kingsnake, a snow corn and a western hognose.
I decided to go for a 36" vivexotic. I know this may seem massive for him but i plan on putting a LOT of decor and hides in there for him. My cornsnake hatchie is in a 24" viv already with lots of hides and decor and he has settled in very well and is always out and exploring so im hoping that even tho theyre 2 different types of snakes-the hides and decor will help him feel secure.
My viv came yesterday flatpacked and i had a great time putting it together, its really nice (i got the oak finish one if anyones thinking about getting one). I just need to wait for my payday to get the thermostates etc. Then i will seal any gaps with the reptile safe sealant stuff i have. Once its all set up im going to let it all get to the right temps and humidity first.
I went to the local rep store yesterday to have a look. Ive seen a lot of people here who arent as keen on shops and prefer breeders. I can see their point however were i live it is hard to find a decent breeder. I trust this rep shop as its well known here for its quality. theyve been established here almost 30 years and the guys lecture in the university here on herp etc. I was also very pleased with my cornsnake and i take comfort in the fact that they will refuse to sell to some people who dont have the adequate equipment etc, also nothing is sold unless it is fully eating and shedding, the shop also takes in unwanted/neglected reptiles.
Anyways i was going to go for a normal purley because i could afford then to get one sooner. But i went in yesterday and the guy showed me a pastel that someone was coming to collect later that day. I am SOLD on the pastel, it was absolutley stunning, its contrast was amazing. So im saving a little bit more to get a male pastel.
I am looking forward to getting the snake, i keep looking in at my empty viv lol. Has anyone any advice to share about general keeping as im only used to my corn.
lastly, i have a quick qu. I have this large stick/log that my uncle picked up from somewhere near the grand canyon while he was travelling in his youth. This is a good 25 years ago and it has been sitting in a room pretty much ever since. It is bone dry obviously but i noticed some cobwebs near the end of it probably from a spider from here not near the grand canyon. Is it ok to put it in the viv as decor or should i bake it just to be safe-or would any bacteria etc be long gone???
thanks,
