The US dub editted out a lot of references to the original cartoon because they wouldn't make sense at all if you never saw it.
Lol, I know I ended up watching Dragonball Z before I actually watched Dragonball. Things make much more sense if you actually watch them in order, regardless of how they edited the US version of DBZ.

Some 8 or 9 years ago or so, I got a hold of the raw Japanese version (with English subs) of the entire series from DB to GT. The Buu Saga had yet to air in the US. I watched from the beginning. DB is not as action packed as DBZ. It's more comical than anything. It also has swearing and partial non-sexual nudity. Master Roshi was actually pretty awesome for most of the show. Roshi and Oolong are also giant pervs. I also finally understood the Red Ribbon Army and the giant joke they represented.
Then I saw how editted DBZ was. A lot of blood was taken out. Master Roshi is seen drinking beer and still being a perv. You also see some characters like Lunch that we mostly exclusive to DB make brief appearances in DBZ just to tie-up some loose ends.
The changed names really kill me. Like Hercule is actually called Mr. Satan (japaense say: Sah-tan, not Say-tan). Which makes his daughter Videl's name make more sense. It's an anagram for devil.
Did you know that Kami is actually supposed to be the god of the earth? He is referred to as Kamisama which means lord god.
Bulma is actually Blooma which is a take off of Bloomer. Her whole family is underwear.
There was an old joke that said DBZ was just a bunch of fruits, nuts, and dairy products. That's true enough.
I think is funny how much we edit anime but we have other shows that are much worse. Cartoons are not just for kids!
I really need to get my hands on more of the original shows.
One of the things I love to do is watched dub anime with the English subtitles on. Most of the time what they are say isn't even close to the subtitles.
