    Bateaters vs Pures?

Just came across some photos of bateater pythons, and I gotta say, they're one of the most beautiful snakes I've ever seen.

I'm not planning one any time soon, but I'm just curious, what are the differences in care between a bateater and a retic, or a bateater and a Burm? I don't know much about caring for the giant pythons as it is, but I assume they're at least a little bit different. Do bateaters stay closer to a Burm size, a retic size, or somewhere in the middle?

And where the hell did they come up with an AWESOME name like bateater?

    Re: Bateaters vs Pures?

Ive never heard of these snakes, and when i read this post i looked them up. I couldnt find too much info on them, execpt apperently its a burm/retic cross..
So im guessing their size would vary between burms and retic size depend on which gene the individual snake get i think. And the care is more than likely the same as well i would think.
Very beautiful snakes though i must say..

    Re: Bateaters vs Pures?

Bateater care would be the same as for retics and burms, the usual 78-80 coolside and 88-90 hot side, 60% humidity if possible, but most will do fine at 35-40%

They will be comparably sized to a retic and burmese, as with all hybrids you never know what traits they will end up with, but most usually seem to come through from the mother. Many bateaters top around 12 feet but as I said, you never know with hybrids. Scrambled genetics are unpredictable, they are all different.

Usually the mother of a bateater is the permiscuous burmese, as female retics will typically reject other breeds. Many guys have lost male burms to pissed off female retics.

They were originally sold as Borneo Bateaters and labeled as a newly discovered species from Indonesia. Eventually people found out it was just a cross but they kept the name.

They're beautiful snakes but I don't want to keep anything that I can't handle safely by myself. I don't really want to get into hybrids either.
