savannah monitor hides

I have an adult savannah monitor(about 2.5-3ft) and i was looking for a good hide for it but i cant find one that is big enough. All of the commercial ones are either expensive too small or both. any suggestions? and hes in a 6x2x3 enclosure.

You can always build him a rete's stack...........

He's not creating his own burrows?

With a proper substrate and setup your sav should excavate its own "hides". Any enclosure pics?

As stated above, any substrate other than soil/sand/dirt ect is WRONG for savannah husbandry. Unless your savannah is unable to dig (mine is missing almost all his toes and can't dig for instance) you need to construct a burrow either from large tubing or sealed wood that is buried in various places.

well he likes to dig behind his basking rocks and he has sort of a burrow there but i thought he might like an actual hide, the substrate is topsoil with mulch on top of it.

Generally the monitor will find a suitable place for his own needs to burrow. Watch what he is doing, he's telling you what he needs and what he looks for in a hide. Your hide won't come close to matching the humidity/temps he is getting out of the one he constructed.

Lids from Rubbermaid style 55 gallon trash cans make excellent hides for Bloods, boas, and larger lizards like Savs.

Cut out an opening on the edge and that is it. Large footprint, but low to the ground, inexpensive and easy to find, and they make an excellent hidespot to go on top of the substrate.

yeah he LOVES digging a "tunnel" behing his basking rocks. ill post pics tomorrow.
