How Long Does it Take to Get Over an RI?

Last Friday I noticed my little Het. pied girl was having a hard time getting her shed off. I took her out and soaked her. I managed to get all of the skin off except her neck and the top of her head, including the eyecaps, which were still stuck. After a soaked her, I heard her wheezing and witnessed several episodes of open mouth breathing. I assumed she had a minor RI, and on Sat. morning I still witnessed her doing this. I took her to the vet on Sat. afternoon, and the vet confirmed it was an RI. She is getting Ceftazidime every 72 hours for six weeks.
I bumped up the heat and have been misting her tub as needed. She's had three shots already. She ate a medium sized mouse on Thurs. morning too. (Only 105 grams) Today I took her out to observe her and check her out. She got all of the shed off, including the eyecaps. I held her for about ten minutes, and I didn't see any open-mouth breathing or hear any weezing. (Yeah!) Did I jump too soon for the vet, or is she really getting better this fast?

Hi, I'm NOT an expert, but I just had this conversation with the vet, my juvenile BP also is on Ceftazidime for an RI and I caught it very early. From what I understand, any observation of a (positive) change in symptoms is likely a good sign and different individuals can/will respond over different durations. Certainly it's recommended to continue with the full course of antibiotics (as I'm sure you plan on doing). Hope all continues to go well!

    Hi,

Did you get the stuck shed off her head or not?

Because stuck shed in the nostrils can cause wheezing and pops as well.

Yes, she finally got it all off I noticed yesterday afternoon. The sound had been coming from her throat though, not her nasal cavity
