Het paperwork??
Tried searching the forums for this topic and didn't come up with anything. It's possible I just wasn't searching the right terms though.
I'm fairly new to the bp world. I've seen quite a few ads that stated that the het they were selling came with paperwork. My question is: what does this paperwork entail?
I understand if its from a big time breeder, they can essentially use their reputation to guarantee that the het pied your buying is actually het for pied. However, how does a virtual nobody (like me) guarantee to my buyers that the hets I'm selling are genuine? Is it essentially a piece of paper with my signature that says mom snake is this and dad snake is this so that means baby snake is het? Or is there some sort of ball python verifying agency that guarantees it (haha)?
Just a question I've been thinking about a bit. I'm interested in getting into breeding in the next couple of years and am definitely interested in hets!

Paperwork means nothing if the breeder is not known. Unless the het was originally purchased from a known breeder and comes with photo ID and guarantee paperwork from the original breeder which can then be traced back.
At the same time, you are correct when you say a well known breeder can sell hets without paperwork if they are trusted and have a good and honest reputation.
A lot goes into selling snakes. If you ever want the business of better known BP hobbyists and the ability to sell at market value instead of having to lower your prices until it isn't worth it anymore, you need to start small and build a reputation.
If you are looking into buying hets and are unsure about the breeder selling it, check the feedback forums here, the BOI on fauna, or post an inquiry. You can always find info on most anyone trying to sell reptiles if you look in the right places or post inquiries about them.

Re: Het paperwork??
The paperwork is as good as the breeders word.
I could take a pic of 2 pieds put them on a card and put a pic of a normal and say the 2 pieds are the parents.
could this be true? Yes
Could it be false? Yes
There is no blood working being done by a third party to verify their the parents lol.
So as i said its useless, its pretty much to guarantee the genetics in case for some odd reason it doesnt prove out or if you ever go to resell the het.

I bought a Pastel het Clown from TSK last year, they send the reciept with a series of numbers that they assigned that particular snake, you can go to their site and punch in the numbers and a picture of your snake will pop up.

Well if you had a pic of 2 pieds and said they were the parents anyone who knows anything about genetics would know that pied to pied does not make hets it makes pieds. sorry just had to point that out. I give genetic guarantees with my hets it shows I am willing to put my name on paper saying that the snake pictured is in fact a het.

Re: Het paperwork??
I have paperwork for my het pieds that I got from a "small" breeder. Even though he is a small breeder, I trust him and it makes me feel better knowing that he put his name and good word on paper.
The paperwork basically has a photo of the mother Pied and a photo of the snake I bought labeled as a het Pied.
Sure they could still lie and provide false paperwork, but that's where the buyer needs to protect themselves and do some research before making the purchase.

Re: Het paperwork??
Once you start selling your own hets, make up your own paperwork.
It might be tough to find people to trust they are hets at first, but as time proves they are, your rep will spread.
As long as you're true to the customers, the rep will follow.

I have though of this as well.
A het is what it is, a gamble, until it is proven out.
This is what worries me even if I were to but an OG female from a big breeder.
I am going to buy a (morph) het OG so I at least get something to work with for my money.
Two to three years is a long time to wait on a normal het and then not pan out

In this post I don't discuss paperwork but I do contemplate the fallout surrounding hets not proving out. Unfortunately, a very large number of people in the business have been on the receiving end of a het not proving. I have. It's a horrible, stomach-turning, feeling. Sadly, 100% of the other breeders I regularly interact with have, too.
In the end the only thing you can do is try to buy from someone you trust. That's so easy to say but so tough to do. It's not fair to say that small, so-called "no name" breeders are not worthy of trust when it comes to hets. It is equally unfair to blindly trust the names that you see with frequency around the business. Due diligence is ultimately your responsibility but at some point you have to take a leap of faith in the person from whom you are buying. It's plausible for a mistake to be made no matter who the breeder is; the real test is how they handle it on the back-end.
