Picky eater????

I went and picked up a frozen rat yesterday for my BP to eat today when the guy put it in the bag I kinda chuckled and said "I hope fluffy isnt picky on colour he has always had white mice or rats" Well I tried to feed him tonight heated the rat did the rat dance and I swear he looked at me like "WTF" is that!! and turned away He totally refused it I waited then danced it again and again no luck I decieded to thaw a few of the mice I had left over just to see If maybe colour had anything to do with it and He ate them 3 white mice!!! Could it possibly be he is picky on colour Or is it just a total coincidence Im happy he got his meal and well I will not buy another black rat again

Rub the mice on the rat.

Then get him to take the rat. U get the idea its just scenting until he switches over

His last 4 meals have been rat there was no issue until tonight Im sure it wasnt the colour maybe it was to big?? not warm enough he wanted NO part in it hopefully next week is better

My male normal used to eat f/t small rats and live small rats. Now he only wants to eat live small adult mice. I ordered a bunch of frozen mice to see if he will take these for me. He has become quite picky.

Most people will tell you they can't tell the difference in colors, but from personal experience they can and do.

I had a massive normal female years ago, back when I didn't know what I was doing, and she only ate high white prey. Solid white, or mostly white with some colored splotches. She would not touch a solid grey, brown, or black prey item. And believe me, we tried.

So, it is possible for them to refuse based on color, at least in my experience. That is why all of my current snakes get fed a wide range of colors from the beginning.

Mine does the same thing. He will take solid, or mostly white prey, but he won't touch solid, or mostly colored prey. Yet, if I leave the colored prey in front of his hide and darken the room, usually within an hour or so, he will eat it, which leads me to two possible theories:

1) The color of the preys fur somehow affects the heat signature, much like the way light colored clothing and paint will reflect light and heat, whereas dark colored clothing and paint will absorb it.

Or

2) They have way better eyesight and color differentiation than we give them credit for. This could possibly explain why he will eat a colored prey in the dark, because at that point, he is relying on smell more than sight and can't see what the color of the prey is.
