 faulty electric heater
I wish this were just an april fools joke...
Last night, our electric heater malfunctioned and stayed on for who knows how long.
It killed 28 rat babies, 5 adult gerbils, 7 adult rats, and 3 adult ASFs. One ASF was pregnant. We lost about half of our collection.
It's a bummer, but at least we have plenty. We were able to freeze almost all of them before rigor set in. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

I feel for you................ours are in my shed and the temps here in Texas are starting to get higher.
We are looking to a/c the shed here in a payday or two. Just hoping it doesnt get too hot too soon

I had a failure a month ago on a heater... Mine was a Herpstat T-stat though, on my breeding pied ball pythons!
Made me sick to loose them.

Not sure what brand it is. We used it all this winter in the shed. Our outdoor temps get down to -30 deg F. in the dead of winter, and it worked well. Our shed is foam insulated...
Anyway, I'll probably end up putting another 24V stat on a receptacle with a transformer and contactor or relay to control the receptacle so it can't happen again...well, 24V. t-stats are much less likely to fail...oh, I'm an HVAC tech and electrician...makes it easy. This is how I have it set up for the snakes.
Sorry to hear you lost your pieds...that sucks!

I use oil-filled radiator heaters. I've never had one get too hot, but they don't last nearly as long as an electric heater. I usually get two full winters out of a oil-filled. I always go to Target around this time of year and snatch up the clearance ones.. They sell them for around $20 this time of year, just gotta get there at the right time...
In my snake rooms, I use a thermostat on them, they work great that way. I use them with their built in thermo in my two rodent rooms. Of course, a steady temperature isn't all that crucial for the rodents....
