    New to Balls

Hello all. I once had a normal Ball and had a blast with it. Then my city changed their ordinance and I had to get rid of her. I have been reading up and studying them ever since and want to get into breeding. I am headed to a reptile expo to purchase 2 morphs. I am thinking of starting with a Bumble Bee and a Lesser. My goal is a AXANTHIC KILLER BEE eventually. Anyone have any suggestions on what to start with or any other advice.

If our goal is a axanathic killer bee, you should start with a axanathic, a pastel and a bumble bee with some normals thrown in to out breed your genetics so you aren't line breeding all the time and just go all out for the color you want to produce. Also make sure you are getting into this for the love of the animals not the money and count yourself lucky if you make enough to pay for your feeders, just break even or even actually turn a little bit of a profit!

Trust me this is not for profit and I will not be running a snake mill. I have always had a love for snakes. And I have just recently became financially stable to pursue my dream. I am still learning so forgive my ignorance but what is line breeding?

Line breeding is breeding related animals to one another either to prove genealogy or lock in a trait.

Inbreeding and linebreeding really isn't a much of an issue as people make it out to be in reptiles. I probably wouldnt inbreed for 30 generations consistently, but 3-5 or even more generations really will not have a negative impact on your animals unless you already have some kind of underlying cause.

    And welcome to bp.net

    Correct.

What if you got a pastel het axanthic and a spider het axanthic? Then you could work on proving out the axanthic gene, while making some bees, pastels, & spiders axanthic or PH axanthic. You will also produce some normals that are ph axanthic along the way. Then selctively breed these animals to best fit your odds of hitting the Killer Bee Axanthic.

Line breeding is breeding brother to sister, father to daughter, mother to son... and no worries about any sort of ignorance... props to you for being willing to ask what a term means that you didn't recognize/understand. Thats what we are all here for, to talk about what we love to do and hopefully learn from each other!!
