Eye Caps

Hey,

I'm fairly concerned about the eye caps on my female normal that we rescued a few weeks ago.

When we got her we believed that she still had eye caps (there were wrinkles on her eyes and such)

She recently just had a shed. It still wasnt a good shed, and were doing all we can to fix her husbandry. As it was, we gave her a bath and gently got all fo her shed off up to her head. Today was the day, and I ran her through a towel a few times, then got her eye caps off. But underneath, her eyes are still wrinkled.. Now, from what I know shed is the bottom layer of skin, so if her eye caps came off then anything ontop of it would have.

Is it possible her eyes are wrinkled, or they have taken shape from the past shed being on her eyes all the time?

Or is there something else created from wrinkley eyes? (bad humidity etc)

When we got her, she was on a completely open air screen terrarium, no hide, and just a few rocks. Were putting her into a new 50QT tub today, and we already got her hides and such.

Let me know what you think, or what this could be.

I've never had this problem, I'm just giving my opinion. Not sure how caps come off when there are multiple stuck caps, but I'd assume they might not all come off at the same time. Don't quote me on that. If you are that concerned you should bring her to a herp vet and let them deal with it. Pictures would be more helpful.

My recommendation is to not worry about it. Retained eye caps are not a life threatening condition. I believe any corrective actions would not be worth the stress on the snake, especially since you are not 100% sure she still has retained caps.

Just focus on maintaining proper humidity levels in her enclosure (at least 50% humidity at all times) and the next time she sheds it should come off in one complete piece, eye caps and all. When that happens you'll know all caps are off and her eyes are fine.

Wrinkled eyes can be a sign of waaaay too low humidity. If you look at the shed you should be able to see if the eye portion is intact. If that is the case then the humidity is low and I would recommend increasing it a bit. What are the current tank temp and humidity at?

I read somewhere on these forums that the wrinkles can be caused by low humidity and poor hydration of the snake. I think fixing up her home and making sure she has lots of available fresh water should relieve the problem in a shed or two

Okay,

I do remember somewhere seeing that if a BP has a dimple in their eyes its too low humidity.. I was assuming that this might be the same thing.

When we got her she was in a screen top, and we kept her in that to ensure she stays on feed.
Just recently we put her in a tub, and we are hoping that the humidity is good in there.

The person we got her from didnt really know what they were doing.
She didnt have hides.. we dont even know if she had heat. She was 978grams when we got her, and she is 3 years old.

As for the eye caps, she did have a bad shed last shed, but I personally took her eye caps off two days ago, after giving her a bath and using a warm towel. It was wrinkled underneath them.

She had these wrinkles when we got her, and she was always rubbing her eyes on rocks and windows and stuff, so I thought she might have an eyecap.. That or they're bugging the hell out of her.

My boa had stuck eye caps last shed, so what i did was mist his tank a few times daily and within a few days, he got them off.

Well, we will keep focusing on humidity and do everything we can to optimize husbandry.

We thought she had an RI last week cause for a day she was wheezing, and holding her mouth open every once in awhile. . But the day after she didnt show any signs of it, then she went into shed, and still hasnt shown any signs of the RI.
