pest control question from new BP owner

    Hi!
We recently got our first BP and, without thinking about it, I have the pest control people coming to the house soon. My plan was to just take my BP in a travel box to work with me until it would be okay to return him to the house. But I think he has begun the shedding process. Do you think it would stress him too much to be handled and moved during this time? He is just at the point of looking quite dull and his eyes are beginning to look cloudy. Thanks for your help!

It would probably be a lot better for the BP to be a little stressed then to be breathing toxic fumes. Bring him with you. Stuck shed is easily fixed, dead snake is not so easy.

I would definately take him with you if there is a way I would try to keep him in something fairly dark and not too roomy I think that helps them feel more secure.

Yes, get him out of there! I strongly recommend keeping him at your work area or at a friends house for at least a month after the pest control people spray your place down. Those fumes would kill a snake pretty darned fast!

Not trying to still thread or anything I just had a question myself. Years ago I had parrots. We moved to a new home that had lots of spiders and such so we had to have an exterminator come out. I was concerned about my parrots because they are really sensitive to chemicals, candles, nonstick cookware etc. Things like that are really deadly for birds. We called the exterminator and ask him not to go in the bird room and he assured us the chemicals were not harmful to our birds. Nothing ever happened to any of them. So my question is how can the chemicals they use be different for snakes?

I personally would never leave any of my animals in the house regardless of what the exterminator said. It may be a pain to move your animals, but if you absolutely had to, ask a friend if they would 'babysit' your critters (in cages) and give them some money for it.

As for the snakes, they are really easy to move temporarily. I keep shipping boxes around for that very reason. Put them in some pillowcases/bags, put them in an insulated paper stuffed box, use a heat pack if you need to, and take them wherever. If you can't take your snake with you to work or wherever you are going, asking a friend to babysit a securely taped box would be fairly easy even if they were afraid of snakes. And give them money for it! It will ease their nerves

Re: pest control question from new BP owner

I work pest control and my question is what treatement are they doing?
most just spray the baseboards and we have had no issues with birds or reptiles. Think about it, the LD 50 is to kill insects. now look at the size of your animals and the amount needed to do harm on them. If you are worried about it just dont have them spray that room. As far as the inside goes I think you would be ok just having them spray the outside and the doors and bathrooms inside.
    I'm not your friend buddy!
