    Feeder Rabbits?

I currently breed mice, rats, gerbils, and guinea pigs for feeders and to sell to local petshops. I also breed rabbits on a fairly limmited basis for pets. But I just had a request for a 5 day old rabbit and a 1lb rabbit, frozen, as feeders. I have never killed a rabbit and have really no idea of how to go about it. What do I do with the pinky rabbit? Put it in the freezer like I would a mouse or rat pink? Is that humane for rabbits? Or do I use CO2?

I've looked online and can't seem to find very much on rabbit feeders and nothing has said how to kill a pinky rabbit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

CO2 is definitely much more humane than freezer. Think about it: would you rather die by gently falling asleep or die of hypothermia?

When we were in 4-H and we bred rabbits and we had to kill them, We snapped their necks. Might not have been ethical, but that's what we did. It didn't happen alot, maybe 5-6 times out of 10 years.

I know with pinky mice they just freeze them. As far as pinky rabbits go I would probably just co2 it because of the size. Pinky mice are really small and die quick from freezing as compared to an adult mouse. Good Luck

With rabbits I break their neck. I will see if I can describe how to do this.

Pick the rabbit up with your off hand (your left hand if you are right handed). Grab the rabbit in front of the hips, in that little hollow spot, and pick it up with its head hanging down toward the floor.

Use your other hand and grab the rabbits neck right behind the head.

Now you need to kind of "pop" the rabbits neck, pulling the snooter away from the tooter and twisting simultaneously.

I'm sure that there is a video of this someplace. I'll find one.

    Re: Feeder Rabbits?

Ive purchased a ton of rabbits and always hand picked live ones for my "purchase"

The guy always put them down in this manner, and was the fastest most humane thing I've ever seen.

This looks like a pretty good method LOL. It doesn't get much faster than this.

It doesn't get ANY better than this.

Take your pick...cervical dislocation or complete brain destruction.
